The independent city of Salem is located in Roanoke county in the Shenandoah Valley between the Virginia Blue Ridge Mountains and the Allegheny Mountains of the Roanoke River. Salem is an old fashioned small town community involved heavily in sports marketing and tourism.

There are many place3s to stay in Salem or nearby Roanoke whether it be a motel, hotel, bed and breakfast, campground or cabin rental. Salem offers many attractions such as festivals, athletic facilities, NCAA tournaments, golfing, The Roanoke Valley Green-way, museums, farmers market, Salem Red Sox Baseball, entertainment and much more.


History of Salem VA

The city of Salem Virginia was foudned in 1802. In the early 1600s the inhabitants were the Indians that came to the Shenandoah Valley for hunting wild game. In 1671, Batts and Fallam arrived in the area and met the Totera Indian tribe. They where the first Europeans to settle Salem. One of the most known settlers in Salem, was a friend of George Washington’ and led the colonists gasint the Shawnee in the Battle of Point Pleasant; was Andrew Lovis. He also evicted, Lord Dunmore the last British governor at the Battle of Gwinn Island. They constructed a fort west of Salem in his honor and named it Fort Lovis.

Then James Simpson a soldier at the Battle of Point Pleasant invested in the area
