Appalachia is a small town located in Wise County in the Southwest Virginia Blue Ridge Mountains. When visiting Appalachia check out the coal mining history and culture, The Bee Rock Tunnel, Appalachia Culture Arts Center, Louis E Heneger Miners Memorial Park, museums, local restaurants, boutique shopping and more.


History of Appalachia VA

The Appalachia post office was established in 1898 and became an official town in 1908. Appalachia at one time was the center of the booking coal mining culture and industry. The town started out as a hub of eight small coal mining camps just outside of town. In 1890 the railroad appeared to export the coal from the area and made a junction in the town of Appalachia from the Louisville and Nashville Railroads.
