History of Stanardsville VA

The town of Stanardsville was established in 1794, and was named after its founder William Stanard. William was a member of a very prominent wealthy Virginia family. Standardsville gained a popular status in the 1800s as a last stop for travelers crossing the mountains at Swift Run Gap. During the 1800s the town has hotels, taverns, restaurants, a movie theater, and shops. Stanardsville became a thriving community and a gateway to the Shenandoah Valley.
