Frederick County is located in the northern part of the Western Maryland mountains. The county seat is the town of Frederick. It borders the southern border of Pennsylvania and the northeastern border of Virginia. Catoctin Mountain and South Mountain, form an extension of the Blue Ridge Mountains and the majority of Frederick county lies between them in the valley.
