History of Maryville TN
When the first explorers visited the area, they discovered the Great Indian Warpath which is still the Us-411 route today. During the Revolutionary War in 1785 John Craig built a wooden enclosure around some cabins known as Fort Craig at present day Maryville. John Craig donated 50 acres next to the fort for the founding of a new town. The town was incorporated as a city on July 11, 1795 and named Maryville after Mary Grainger Blount; wife of the governor William Blount who they named Blount county after him.
In 1808 from Virginia the family of Sam Houston moved to Maryville TN. Sam Houston built a one room schoolhouse in 1811; then joined thar my during the War of 1812.
During the Civil War Maryville was extremely anti-slavery and pro-Union. Maryville was finally liberated in 1804 by Federal troops.
