The city of Elizabethton is located in Carter county on the Tennessee side of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Elizabethton is also the county seat of Carter county. Roan Mountain is the highest point at 6285 feet in Carter County. Elizabethton has many things to do and see for visitors, along with a variety of restaurants, hotels, attractions, cabin rentals and outdoor recreation within Carter County in the surrounding area.

History of Elizabethton TN

The first people to settle the Tennessee River Valley was the Muskogee Native Americans fall by the Cherokee Indians. The Native Americans were forced to move south and west overtime, including the Muskogee Yuki, Chickasaw and Chocataw. From 1838 1839 almost 17,000 Cherokee‘s are forced to march to a new Indian territory west of Arkansas. This came to be known as the trail of tears.

In 1769 James Robertson and Daniel Boone on his third expedition discovered the Wataga River Valley which is present day Elizabethton. Robertson stayed in planted corn, while Daniel Boone continued on to Kentucky. Robertson let a group of 13 families from present the Raleigh North Carolina to North East Tennessee along the Watauga river, Doe river, Holston river, and Nolichucky river, And next to Sycamore Shoals to establish an independent regional government known as the Watauga association.
