Blue and Gray Reunion was held: May 30 – JUNE 2, 2019
On May 28, 1861, Col. George Porterfield and his Confederate troops arrived in Philippi, where they camped or were quartered in town. Neighbors and families were already divided on the question of secession. There were at least 750, if not upwards of 2,000 troops. At daylight on June 3, two columns of Union forces, with perhaps 3,000 men, arrived from Grafton under the command of Col. Ebenezer Dumont and Col. Benjamin Kelley.
Mistaking a pistol shot by a Mrs. Humpreys on the hill above the town as a signal to start the battle, the Union troops fired on the Confederates with two brass six-pound Napoleon cannons. The Confederates routed to a big rock south of town and departed in good order to Belington and ultimately to Beverly.
Pleasant Creek Wildlife Management Area is located near Philippi, West Virginia in Barbour and Taylor counties. Located on 3,030 acres land that varies from wetlands to steeply forested woodlands, the Pleasant Creek WMA rises to an elevation of 1,600 feet.

The Twin Lakes Campground is located in the historic town of Belington, a quiet little town on the Tygart Valley River corridor. Belington’s rich history includes the nearby locations of the Battles of Phillipi and Laurel Hill during the Civil War. The Twin Lakes Campground features 40 sites for tent or trailer hook-up, rest facilities, a convenience store, a swimming pool, and a grassy playground set against the backdrop of the rolling hills of Laurel Mountain.
Twin Lakes Campground is a great place to bring the family for a weekend of fun or a mini-vacation. Its in-town location allows you not only to have a family camping experience, but also to explore the historic local community. Your itinerary can include visiting a local museum, participating in local celebratory events, taking in local entertainment, and enjoying a relaxing dinner at one of the neighborhood restaurants. Arden Party Rock is a local party and swimming hangout and is pretty cool. I’ve only been there once and it was a very rip roaring high level of water at the time, so I didn’t really get to see all the rock. I would recommend approaching the rock on the south bank of the river. There is probably some place to view this from the north bank, but, it is obviously easier and safer to get out on the rocks from the south bank. That would be along the B&O Road which parallels the river.

The Barbour County Fair comes around every summer, and it’s the community’s way of celebrating the end of a successful growing season. The opportunity for fun is unlimited!

The competition also involves horsemanship, including the 4-H Horse Show, livestock, and even bull riding. There is plenty of space for your trucks and trailers, as well as arenas, pastures, and paddocks for the livestock.
There is a grand parade, a car show and every child’s favorite, “Kids’ Day.” You can’t miss the demolition derby or the lawn/garden tractor-pull. ATV enthusiasts can compete in the exhilarating races. The fair also offers live entertainment (schedules vary from year to year.)
This stately brick home at Philippi, West Virginia is set against the rolling hills of Barbour County and was built in 1870. The mansion house has been restored with great attention to authenticity and features homemade brick and walnut woodwork throughout. The house and land reflect the early history of West Virginia with the original owners engaged in farming. Emancipated slaves from the farm worked on the construction of the house. The surrounding area is rich in civil war history with the first land battle of the war fought in Philippi in June 1861. The Tygart Flyer Scenic Train is a great way to appreciate splendid scenery by rail, all while following the path of two marvellous rivers that flow through Barbour County. The round trip journey takes approximately four hours, and the final destination is the High Falls of Cheat: a 150-foot-wide, 18 feet high waterfall. Because the landmark is situated in a remote part of the region, a trip on the Tygart Flyer Scenic Train offers Barbour County visitors chances to get a taste of some of the natural beauty that has attracted people to the area for generations. An S-curve tunnel and a canyon that descends 1,500 feet deep are just a couple of many other sights to enjoy.
The train fare includes an “all-you-can-eat” sandwich buffet, a cookie for dessert, and refreshing non-alcoholic beverages. For a reasonable additional fee, guests can also ride in the vintage 1922-era Pullman parlour car located in the rear of the train. It offers especially spectacular views from the comfort of supportive armchairs. Because the train’s route spans 46 miles, it’s an excellent opportunity to see some of the picturesque scenery that surrounds Barbour County with all the luxuries of a relaxing train ride.

Located in a building that was constructed in 1911 and once served as the Philippi B&O Railroad station, the Barbour County Historical Museum in Philippi is a great diversion for visitors who want to know more about the area. The building is characterized by Mission Revival-style architecture and considered among one of the more unusual examples that style within West Virginia.
