The historic Embassy Theatre opened its doors to the public on November 18, 1931. It was the height of the Great Depression. Although many had less than good fortune, people needed those fantasy realms the movies could provide, giving the Jacob Kauffman family an incentive to build the Embassy Theatre on Cumberland’s Baltimore Street.

In the early Fifties, the cinema’s popularity dwindled due to the advent of television. In 1959, the Embassy closed its doors, and the premises were altered to create an annex for the adjacent Cumberland Cloak and Suit Store.  A.C. Warhaft bought the Embassy in 1981 to house his custom drapery shop, which remained until his death in 1992. A nonprofit corporation was formed in December 1997 to revivify the theatre as a multi-purpose arts facility.  The retail ceiling was removed to expose the gloriously colorful stenciled proscenium and ceiling to the orchestra floor.  A stage was built, the original exterior doors were rehung, and a box office was rebuilt to match the original.

The Tygart Flyer Scenic Train is a great way to appreciate splendid scenery by rail, all while following the path of two marvellous rivers that flow through Barbour County. The round trip journey takes approximately four hours, and the final destination is the High Falls of Cheat: a 150-foot-wide, 18 feet high waterfall. Because the landmark is situated in a remote part of the region, a trip on the Tygart Flyer Scenic Train offers Barbour County visitors chances to get a taste of some of the natural beauty that has attracted people to the area for generations. An S-curve tunnel and a canyon that descends 1,500 feet deep are just a couple of many other sights to enjoy.

The train fare includes an “all-you-can-eat” sandwich buffet, a cookie for dessert, and refreshing non-alcoholic beverages. For a reasonable additional fee, guests can also ride in the vintage 1922-era Pullman parlour car located in the rear of the train. It offers especially spectacular views from the comfort of supportive armchairs. Because the train’s route spans 46 miles, it’s an excellent opportunity to see some of the picturesque scenery that surrounds Barbour County with all the luxuries of a relaxing train ride.

blue and gray reunion 2.jpg
Philippi, WV 26416, USA

Blue and Gray Reunion was held: May 30 – JUNE 2, 2019
On May 28, 1861, Col. George Porterfield and his Confederate troops arrived in Philippi, where they camped or were quartered in town. Neighbors and families were already divided on the question of secession. There were at least 750, if not upwards of 2,000 troops. At daylight on June 3, two columns of Union forces, with perhaps 3,000 men, arrived from Grafton under the command of Col. Ebenezer Dumont and Col. Benjamin Kelley.

Mistaking a pistol shot by a Mrs. Humpreys on the hill above the town as a signal to start the battle, the Union troops fired on the Confederates with two brass six-pound Napoleon cannons. The Confederates routed to a big rock south of town and departed in good order to Belington and ultimately to Beverly.

11 West Main Street, Frostburg, Maryland, USA

Historic hotel and banquet facility located in the heart of the Arts and Entertainment District of the City of Frostburg.

The Hotel Gunter has a rich history beginning in 1897 when it opened as the Hotel Gladstone. It boasted 100 rooms, a barbershop and a cafe, along with tennis courts and a petting farm complete with a tame fawn. A fifth-floor observation deck offered majestic views of the town of Frostburg and the surrounding Allegheny Mountains.

While the initial venture was not a success, the hotel was purchased in 1903 by William Gunter for the grand total of $35,000. He renamed it Hotel Gunter and spent the next twenty years making additions including electrical lighting, a 175-seat dining room and a pressed tin ceiling and mahogany bar. By that time, Hotel Gunter was, by one account, “one of the finest hotels and restaurants between Baltimore and Pittsburgh.”

The hotel offered even more intrigue during the early 20th century. Because federal agents were transporting prisoners from the Midwest to Washington, DC, Gunter built a jail cell in the basement. While not in use, the cell is still part of the hotel.

During Prohibition, Mr. Gunter ran a speakeasy that doubled as a cockfighting arena.

Today, Hotel Gunter is home to Toasted Goat Winery, featuring locally made wine. Open 7 days a week, guests of the winery can sample a variety of wines and enjoy lunch and or dinner.

The hotel also features an event venue that is perfect for weddings, parties, reunions and more. Chef Phil is on hand to design the perfect menu.

There are still 12 rooms available for overnight accommodations. History, comfort, and style are all part of the Hotel Gunter charm.
