Rocky Mount is a great main street and town community located in Franklin county Virginia just South of Roanoke and the Blue Ridge Mountains, and west of Smith Mountain Lake. Visitors to Rocky Mount can enjoy a variety of things to do such as see live music at the Harvest Performance Center, and view art galleries presenting paintings, pottery and glassblowing. History of Rocky Mount VA
The first English settler to Rocky Mount arrived in 1760 naming it Rocky Mount for the steep cliff nearby town. The area was comprised of two adjacent villages called Rocky Mount and Mount Pleasant. Rocky Mount established a post office in 1795 and the town of Rocky Mount was divided into lots in 1804.
The area’s major cash crop was tobacco before and after the civil war, along with Franklin County was the leading county dairy producer for North Carolina. In 1873 the town of Rocky Mount was incorporated and the town of Mount Pleasant was absorbed into the new town.
