Danbury is located near Hanging Rock State Park in Stokes County in North Carolina. Danbury’s Sauratown Mountains are the closest mountains to large populations from Winston Salem, Greensboro, Durham and Raleigh. This unique region offers many outdoor activities such as Moores Springs, Piedmont Springs, Cascasde Falls, Tories Den, Hanging Rock State Park, and the Dan River. The Sauratown Mountains were named after the Saura Indians who inhabited the area in the 1700s.
History of Danbury NC
Danbury was founded in 1851 and was formally known as Crawford, and serves as the new centrally-located county seat after Stokes County was divided in 1849. No battles occurred in Danbury during the Civil War, but it housed and supported the war efforts of the Confederate Army. The Moratock Iron Furnace, which is still found in Moratock Park, was used in the smelting of iron ore for bullets and cannons. Other historical features in the town include the Wilson Fulton House, the Old Stokes County Court House, and Moody’s Tavern.
