Town of Snowshoe WV
The town of Snowshoe and the resort is located in Pocahontas County in the Allegheny Mountains of West Virginia. The town is situated between the two mountain ridges of Cheat Mountain and Back Allegheny Mountain and is the second highest peak in the state at an elevation of 4,848 feet called Thorny Flat.
Snowshoe has several commercial areas, The Village at Snowshoe is the most popular, located at the summit of the mountain (rather than at its base). Snowshoe is known for its ski resort but also has extensive mountain biking and horseback trails, a popular golf course designed by Gary Player, wedding and convention areas, a number of summer outdoor activities. Almost half a million skiers visit the area each year, from West Virginia and the larger cities of the Mid-Atlantic and Southeast.
Snowshoe resort covers roughly 11,000 acres in which 244 acres is used for skiing the 60 slopes at the resort and the many trails of the back country. Cupp Run and Shay’s Revenge, have a 1,500 feet vertical drop, which is the highest in the Southeast. The ski trails and lifts were given names that recalled the local history of logging called Grab Hammer, J-Hook, Ball Hooter, and Skidder. The resort has a base of 1,400 condominium and lodge hotel units, most of which are independently owned but managed by the resort.
History of Snowshoe WV
The area of Snowshoe had been logged from about 1905 to 1960, after which it was abandoned. Thomas “Doc” Brigham discovered the mountain and believed it would be a good location to build a new ski resort. Brigham, a dentist from North Carolina, had previously opened the Sugar Mountain and Beech Mountain ski areas in the High Country of North Carolina. Snowshoe Mountain opened to skiing on December 13, 1974.
