The town of Marlinton is located in Pocahontas County along the Greenbrier River and the Monongahela National Forest in West Virginia. Marlinton is the county seat of Pocahontas County at an elevation of 2,126 feet. The town is a 40-minute drive from Marlinton to the top of Snowshoe Mountain. This small genuine town is only 3 blocks long filled with mom and pop store, restaurants, and accommodations. Marlinton has no big chain stores and cell service is available within the town limits. Marlinton is known for its wild beauty and outdoor activities such as bicycling, hiking, fishing, boating, bird watching, motorcycle touring, scenic drives, cross-country and downhill skiing. There is little nightlife off Snowshoe Mountain, but there are local arts and activities. The small town also has seasonal local festivals.
History of Marlinton WV
Marlinton was settled in 1749 by Stephen Sewell and Jacob Marlin, the first Europeans known to have settled in the valley of the Greenbrier River west of the Allegheny Mountains in the valley. The two men built a cabin which would later become Marlinton. The name Marlinton is often pronounced colloquially as if spelled “Marlington.” An oak in Marlinton above the mouth of Knapp Creek once marked the corner of lands surveyed by General Andrew Lewis and granted to the Greenbrier Company in 1751
