Just North of Asheville North Carolina rests a small art town with a lot of hospitality to visitors. Weaverville is a step back in time to revive your spirit in the mountains at a slower pace. Visitors can stay at one of the town’s signature bed and breakfasts or take a short drive to our eclectic and wonderful dining, live music, galleries, massage therapists, unique shopping and some of the prettiest scenery in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Visitors to the area will find all the professional services and conveniences of a larger city, such as financial services, lawyers, medical practices and specialty stores. Weaverville shares Asheville’s reputation as a cosmopolitan hub of the arts, fine dining, spa services and exceptional hospitality. The natural beauty of Weaverville, the healthful climate and its proximity to Asheville’s urban attractions have made this little town the perfect blend of small town and big city.
History of Weaverville NC
Like Asheville, Weaverville in the 1800s was home to grand hotels, such as the Dula Springs Hotel and Blackberry Lodge, where Low Country visitors could escape the heat and pestilence of Southern summers. Author O. Henry spent some of his last days here, regaining his health before returning to New York City and squandering it again. Weaverville College, later renamed Weaver College, contributed a defined element to our small town for 60 years until it closed in the ’30s. The creation of Lake Louise, then known as Lake Juanita, in 1910 made Weaverville an idyllic destination in the country. A year earlier an entrepreneur by the name of Rex Howland built a trolley line that could carry hotel guests and day visitors the six miles from Asheville to Weaverville’s downtown for 35 cents, and in only 45 minutes. Regrettably, Howland’s trolley line ceased operation little more than a decade later, but Weaverville’s reputation as a resort destination was established.
Art in Autumn
The Annual Art in Autumn Outdoor Arts and Crafts Festival takes place the second Saturday in September from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Main Street in downtown Weaverville, North Carolina. The Annual Art in Autumn is sponsored by the Weaverville Business Association, the festival features over 100 juried artists and craftspeople, as well as an exciting array of food and live music. In recent years, Weaverville has established itself as a culturally rich destination point. It has earned a reputation for its quaint small town atmosphere, artistic spirit, and distinctive shops. All are welcome. Admission is free.
Art Safari
The Art Safari Studio Tour in Weaverville North Carolina, is a free self-guided tour of artists’ home studios and see samples of their beautiful work. in the scenic area surrounding the villages of Weaverville and Barnardsville, North Carolina. Weaverville is located just 10 minutes north of Asheville. Visitors are granted direct access during Safari weekends to the home studios of a wide variety of local artists and a few visiting artists. During each Art Safari we post distinctive road signs to help people find their way to our studios. And with the advent of GPS apps in cars and cell phones it has become even easier to find us. On the Friday evening before each Art Safari tour we always stage a gala Preview Party – it is a great opportunity to meet the artists, get a preview of their work, and maybe take home a beautiful souvenir. It’s always a really fun evening. Our Preview Party is our primary fundraising activity and it allows us to keep the Weaverville Art Safari going. Please attend.
