Boone North Carolina located in the Blue Ridge Mountains in Watauga County is home to Appalachian University and the epicenter to mountain adventures. Boone is known as one of the best outdoor adventure destinations in the Southeast and ranked as one of the “Best Small Towns in America”. At 3,333 feet above sea level, Boone sits at the highest elevation of any town its size east of the Mississippi! Summertime in Boone usually consists of temperatures no hotter than 76°F. The regular snowfall provides perfect opportunities for wintry sports! Located off the breathtaking Blue Ridge Parkway, Boone offers a four season playground for families and adventure seekers alike.
History of Boone NC
Boone North Carolina gets its name from the famous pioneer and explorer, Daniel Boone, who on several occasions camped at a site generally agreed to be within the present city limits.
Historians note that this area was originally explored in 1752 by Bishop August Gottlieb Spangeler of Pennsylvania, who was seeking land in the back-country of North Carolina for Moravian colonists to settle.
Although the Cherokee had hunted seasonally in this region, the first permanent settlers came from Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and New England. Jordan Council established a store in what is now downtown Boone.
Watauga County was established in 1849, and the town of Boone, which was incorporated in 1872, was named for Daniel Boone, who first explored and hunted in the region in the 1760s.
Boone was granted a U.S. Post Office on June 20, 1850, and its first Postmaster was Jordan Council.
The town every summer since 1952 has hosted an outdoor amphitheater drama, Horn in the West, portraying the British settlement of the area during the American Revolutionary.
