The small town of Jefferson City is located in Jefferson County in the east Tennessee Mountains. The original name of the city was mossy Creek, but was changed in 1901 to honor Thomas Jefferson. Jefferson City‘s landscape is made up of vast plane lands in large bodies of water, making Jefferson City an ideal vacation spot.

Jefferson City offers historic museums, wildlife sanctuaries, festivals and events, local restaurants, attractions, arts and crafts, shopping, fishing, boating, golfing, air balloon rides, horseback riding, and hiking trails. Some notable Attractions are the Victorian Glenmore mansion, Legacy theater, Centennial Park, patriot Hills golf club, the Ballinger Farm craze maze, and bush beans tour.

History of Jefferson City TN

Jefferson City was originally named Moss Creek due to the vivid green moss growing in the creek bed. The Perk family arrived in 1788 from Virginia and took up settlement in a banded fort beside a spring of freshwater. By 1797, 75-100 families it’s settled within a 4 mile radius. The first gristmill was built using water power by Adam perk in 1795. In 1798 Christopher Hayes established an ironworks which lasted a decade. Many businesses were started such as an axe handle factory, wood carving, cotton spinning factory, and three sawmills. The railroad made a stop in 1858 at mossy Creek when John Banner built a train station on his three acres of land allowing the railroad line East Tennessee, Virginia, George Railroad pass right through the town.
