Town of Rutledge TN
The rural city of Rutledge is located in Grainger County in the East Tennessee Blue Ridge Mountains and in the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains. The city is situated in the Richland Valley at the base of the Clinch Mountain between Blaine and Bean Station.
Known for its history in agriculture especially the world famous tomatoes is celebrates an annual Tomato Festival with an attendance of at least 30,000 per year. Nearby is Cherokee and Norris Lakes and the Holston and Clinch River providing hunting, boating, fishing, swimming, tubing, rafting, and biking. In addition to the beautiful scenery and other recreation Rutledge offers farms, orchards, art galleries, shopping, Buffalo Springs Wildlife Management Center, Appalachian Quilt Trail, and a few local restaurants. History of Rutledge TN
The city of Rutledge was established in 1797 and named for General George Rutledge. In the 19th century Rutledge prospered due to location along the Federal Road (US 11 W.); connecting New Orleans to Virginia.
During the Civil War General Longstreet passed through Rutledge on the way to Russellville. Long Street attacked Union forces and pushed them back to Blaine, this was called the Battle of Bean Station.
