History of Vonore TN

Due to the combining of a little Tennessee River in the Tellico River and the beauty of the area the Cherokee Indian nation maven or it’s capital with many Indian villages along its banks of the river as early as 7500 BC. In the 18th century the Cherokee have many villages including the Tanasi, Echota, Mialoquo, and the Tuskeegee. This is also the birthplace of the Sequoyah creator of the Cherokee language in alphabet.

In 1756 Fort Loudoun was built in Vonore along the banks of the river hoping to obtain Cherokee assistance in the French and Indian war. The Cherokee eventually captured the fort after a long drawn out siege of the fort. And 1819 after the Calhoun treaty the Cherokee gave up Monroe County to the United States. The town received its name in 1890 by Walter Kennedy who applied for a post office station naming the the present day Vonore, Upton Station”. The name is already taken so Walter Kennedy believed it to eventually become a mining town and called in Vonore
