The city of Rocky Top is located in Anderson and Campbell counties in the East Tennessee Blue Ridge Mountains. Rocky Top is 20 miles North of downtown Knoxville. Rocky Top is nearby to Norris Lake, Norris Dam State Park, and Windrock Park. Rocky Top is the only place you can ride and ATV on the roads year round.

History of Rocky Top TN

In 1798 Rocky Top Tennessee was originally name, “Coal Creek”, after the name of the creek running through the middle of the city. After the Treaty of Tellico with the Indians in the area became open for settlement.

In 1891, the Coal Creek War was resolved in the coal miner’s favor abolishing the convict labor program. Convict were unpaid and had to work in the coal mines.

In 1936 Rocky Top was renamed from Coal Creek to Lake City after the TVA completion of Norris Dam formed Norris Lake.

In 2013 Lake City was renamed to Rocky Top after a lawsuit about the famous song of that name, there was no infringement of trademarks or copyright. A US district Court Judge ruled that Thomas A Varlan that it was ok to use the name for that town.
